Composix Kugel Mesh Lawsuits
The Composix Kugel Mesh, manufactured by C.R. Bard, a subsidiary of Davol, Inc., is a ventral, or abdominal hernia mesh patch device that contains a “memory recoil ring,” which allows it to be folded, inserted through a small incision into the abdomen, and once secured in place, springs open and lies flat in the affected area. Despite being approved for public use by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996, the device has been associated with serious complications, threatening the lives of thousands of patients. Said complications include:
- Infections, including abscess formations
- Chronic and severe pain
- Bowel tenderness
- Bowel paralysis
- Bowel obstruction
- Bowel perforation
- Ascites
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Organ damage/failure
- Revision surgeries or corrective surgeries
- Reoccurrence of the hernia
- Internal bleeding
- Peritonitis
- Ring migration through the peritoneum, or abdominal wall
Due to countless reports of the above complications, including death, C.R. Bard and Davol, Inc. began recalling certain types of the device and later expanded its recall in 2006 and 2007. Each recall notice cited a potential for the memory recall ring to buckle or break and potentially lead to bowel perforation and chronic enteric fistula (abnormal connections between the gastrointestinal tract and other abdominal organs). As of January of 2007, the number of mesh products recalled exceeded 100,000 units.
