Accutane Purpose and Injuries
Accutane, also known by the chemical name isotretinoin, is a gel capsule manufactured by Roche Laboratories, Inc., for treatment of acne. It was marketed for treatment of severe nodular acne, but the drug eventually gained popularity for moderate and mild acne. Accutane treats acne by shrinking oil glands and controlling oil and skin cell production. But the drug also comes with serious potential side effects.
Some of the side effects associated with Accutane use include:
- Skin reactions and rash – Some people have developed severe dermatological reactions from taking Accutane, including a condition known as Steven-Johnson Syndrome. Symptoms can be rash, painful blisters, and skin peeling.
- Inflammatory bowel disease – Accutane can cause inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease. Symptoms include gastrointestinal inflammation, ulcers, and diarrhea.
- Suicidal thoughts – People taking Accutane have the potential to develop severe depression or suicidal thoughts. Symptoms can include sadness, fatigue, and thoughts of self-harm.
- Birth defects – Accutane carries a tremendous risk for birth defects if women become pregnant while taking the drug. Children can be born with defects to the ears, eyes, limbs, heart, and brain.
Some of these side effects can lead to life-long issues or even death. At Stern Law, we understand how these tragic injuries have affected our clients’ lives, and we fight to hold the manufacturer accountable.
Accutane Lawsuits
In 2009, Roche pulled Accutane from the market. While the drug is no longer available for prescription use, lawsuits are still being filed related to the injuries people experienced prior to its discontinuation. These lawsuits allege that Roche failed to adequately warn patients and healthcare providers about the risks associated with Accutane and sold the medication in a defective, or unreasonably dangerous, condition.
Thousands of lawsuits are pending around the country, and Roche has settled some previous suits out of court. Because of state statutes of limitations in place, the time to protect your rights is now. If you took Accutane and suffered an injury, contact one of our skilled lawyers immediately.
How Do I Know if I Have a Claim?
Drug product litigation can be confusing, and it can be difficult to tell if you have a claim that entitles you to file a lawsuit. When you work with Stern Law, we will undertake that analysis for you. After contacting our firm, we will conduct an initial investigation of your claim, which will include ordering medical records and building a detailed case file.
In securing your medical records, we will determine whether you took brand-name Accutane or the generic version of the drug, which is important distinction because the legal framework is different for the two kinds of manufacturers. We will also establish your damages by obtaining records that document your physical, mental, and emotional injuries, as well as the costs of your medical treatment. We can claim all this, along with future injury and costs, as damages in your claim.
Once we have gathered the records we need, we will be able to tell you how we can move forward and how the filing process will work.
