Accutane Purpose and Injuries

Accutane, also known by the chemical name isotretinoin, is a gel capsule manufactured by Roche Laboratories, Inc., for treatment of acne. It was marketed for treatment of severe nodular acne, but the drug eventually gained popularity for moderate and mild acne. Accutane treats acne by shrinking oil glands and controlling oil and skin cell production. But the drug also comes with serious potential side effects.

Some of the side effects associated with Accutane use include:

• Skin reactions and rash – Some people have developed severe dermatological reactions from taking Accutane, including a condition known as Steven-Johnson Syndrome. Symptoms can be rash, painful blisters, and skin peeling.
• Inflammatory bowel disease – Accutane can cause inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease. Symptoms include gastrointestinal inflammation, ulcers, and diarrhea.
• Suicidal thoughts – People taking Accutane have the potential to develop severe depression or suicidal thoughts. Symptoms can include sadness, fatigue, and thoughts of self-harm.
• Birth defects – Accutane carries a tremendous risk for birth defects if women become pregnant while taking the drug. Children can be born with defects to the ears, eyes, limbs, heart, and brain.
