NFL Player Concussions
In 2015, Will Smith starred in the movie Concussion, which told a dramatized version of Dr. Bennet Omalu’s battle to have the National Football League (NFL) acknowledge, and stop suppressing the evidence that NFL players frequently suffer from a brain disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The movie was released after a high profile legal battle between former NFL players, and the NFL itself regarding the same issue resulted in a settlement agreement making it possible for afflicted former NFL players to collect up to 5 million dollars in damages for the injuries that they sustained as a result of their time in the league.
NFL Player Concussions and League Liability Lawyers and Lawsuits
CTE is a disease of the brain caused by repeated head trauma, and repeated concussions. The impact of CTE on an individual can be devastating, involving dizziness and headaches on the milder end, and progressing to dementia, deafness, difficulty speaking, vertigo and suicidality. Some individuals end up suffering from ALS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and some cases lead to death. Given the physical nature of football, it is not surprising that concussions and other head trauma are an extremely common injury among NFL players. Concern over the potential damage done by repeated head trauma goes back decades, and CTE was first identified in NFL football players in 2002. The first public acknowledgment of CTE by a senior NFL official did not occur until March of 2016.
The recent settlement offer has made damages available to over 20,000 former NFL players. Individuals who suffer from CTE as a result of playing professional football in the NFL have the right to apply for their share of that settlement offer, up to $5 million. Applying for damages from the settlement offer includes the submitting of related paperwork, with the proper medical evidence to back up an individual’s claim. Regulations and deadlines apply.
If you are a former NFL player who is suffering from CTE, you should consider submitting a claim to recover from the NFL settlement. An experienced attorney can help you through the claims process, and assist you in gathering all of the necessary documentation and the required medical assessments and reports so that you are able to file a timely and complete claim. Failing to apply on time, or failing to file a complete claim can lead to a longer process, or a denial of your claim.
