Warning: Essure Linked to Serious Side Effects
Essure, developed by Conceptus, Inc., a company owned by Bayer, is a permanent, non-surgical form of birth control (touted as a better, nonsurgical alternative than a tubal ligation) where flexible coils are placed through the vagina and cervix to ultimately settle in the fallopian tubes. Once inserted, scar tissue forms around the coils over a three month period, which eventually blocks the fallopian tubes, thus preventing fertilization. After the three month period, a doctor performs certain testing of the implantation site, which includes the injection of dye through the cervix and an x-ray taken to ensure that the dye does not migrate past the coils. When the dye is unable to move past the Essure device, the doctor is able to determine that the implantation was effective in preventing contraception.
While Essure has been successful in preventing pregnancy, thousands of women have reported serious side effects since the device’s release to the public back in 2002. At the Stern Law, PLLC, no person deserves to be harmed by dangerous products and with this in mind, we fight hard for our clients to receive the justice they deserve. Why is Essure Dangerous?
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”), Essure can cause short term risks such as mild bleeding, cramping, pelvic and back discomfort. However, the FDA has received nearly 5,100 reports between 2002 and 2015 of serious complications associated with the use of Essure including chronic pain, uterine and/or fallopian tube damage, autoimmune diseases, perforation of organs due to device migration, abnormal bleeding, ectopic pregnancy, and the need for a hysterectomy due to severe damage to the reproductive organs.
As a result, the FDA released a safety announcement to warn potential patients of the safety risks associated with using Essure, which can be accessed here.
Moreover, according to a study conducted by the British Medical Journal, women who get Essure are ten times more likely to require follow up surgery when compared to women who choose to have tubal ligations.

Essure and the FDA
At this time, the FDA has yet to recall Essure. Notwithstanding, thousands of women continue to assert that the device has ruined their lives due to its many serious complications. As a result of the ongoing problems associated with Essure, in September of 2015, the FDA held a meeting with Obstetrics and Gynecology Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee to examine clinical and scientific opinions as well as the experiences of women who were harmed by the device. Moreover, the FDA received nearly 3,000 comments from the public regarding the risks associated with Essure. As a result, in February of 2016, the FDA ordered Bayer to conduct a post-market surveillance study regarding the risks and benefits of Essure. The FDA also required a new clinical trial to determine the risks for particular women.
Essure Lawsuits
Several lawsuits have been filed against Bayer that include claims of negligence, fraud, misrepresentation of the safety and effectiveness of Essure, failure to warn, breach of implied and express warranty, improper physician training, and negligent device design. Many women who have filed these lawsuits hope to prevent other women from getting an Essure device in addition to seeking compensation for their injuries.
